The speculation about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
