Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
