Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
